Arunachal Tawang Circuit — full itinerary
A Tawang-focused Arunachal tour with monastery visits, high-altitude lakes and border-area scenery.
Day 1 — Guwahati → Bhalukpong → Dirang
- Early morning: Depart Guwahati around 5:00–6:00 AM.
- Tipi Orchidarium, if time permits
- Bomdila viewpoints
- Dirang Valley
- Dirang Monastery
- Evening walk around Dirang
- Distance: approximately 330–350 kmTravel time: around 9–11 hours depending on road conditions and stops.
Guwahati → Mangaldai → Tezpur → Bhalukpong → Bomdila → Dirang
Day 2 — Dirang → Sela → Tawang
- Sela Pass area
- Jaswant Garh War Memorial
- Nuranang Falls
- Tip: Keep this day flexible because mountain-road conditions can affect travel time.
This is one of the most scenic days.
Dirang → Jaswant Garh → Sela Tunnel/Sela Pass → Sela Lake → Nuranang/Jang → Tawang
The Sela Tunnel has improved all-weather connectivity on the Tezpur–Tawang route.
Day 3 — Tawang Local Sightseeing
- Tawang Monastery
- Urgelling Monastery
- Tawang War Memorial
- Old Tawang market
- Local handicraft shops
- Monastery surroundings
After breakfast, explore Tawang.
Tawang Monastery is a major attraction and was founded in 1680–81.
Enjoy sunset/views around Tawang town.
Day 4 — Bum La Pass & Madhuri Lake
- High-altitude border area
- Requires the necessary permissions
- Weather can change rapidly
- One of the most famous scenic locations around Tawang.
This should be your dedicated high-altitude excursion day.
Early morning departure from Tawang.
Tawang → P.T. Tso → Bum La Pass → Sangetsar/Madhuri Lake → Tawang
Madhuri Lake / Sangetsar Lake
Other lakes may be visited depending on road conditions, permissions and available time.
Arunachal Tourism identifies several glacial lakes around Tawang, including Sela Lake, P.T. Tso and Sangetser Lake.
Day 5 — Tawang → Dirang → Bhalukpong
Tawang → Jang → Jaswant Garh → Sela Tunnel → Dirang → Bomdila → Bhalukpong
If you prefer a less tiring trip, stay at Dirang instead of Bhalukpong.
Day 6 — Bhalukpong/Dirang → Guwahati
Bhalukpong → Tezpur → Mangaldai → Guwahati
If starting from Bhalukpong, you can reach Guwahati by afternoon/evening, subject to road conditions.
